This is a composite of five images: a handcrafted plaque and gavel. The plaque is inlaid with glass shapes that form flowers, a tree and leaves. A pile of raw wood is ready to be grouped. The wood, now glued together to form a roughly shaped plaque is trimmed with a band saw. Next the plaque is shaped using a drill attachment. The gavel in its final form before it is finished with stain and fixed onto the plaque.

Judges recognized for their work on juvenile bench

Two judges that preside over juvenile court in Manatee County have been recognized for their work in the juvenile division by the child welfare agencies of the Circuit 12, including Safe Children Coalition, Children’s Legal Services, Department of Children and Families, Department of Health, Parents for Parents and the Statewide Guardian ad Litem Program.

At the recent Dependency Court Summit in Orlando, representatives from the regional child welfare agencies announced the award presentations.

Circuit Judge Susan Maulucci was recognized as Dependency Judge of the Year. “Judge Maulucci stands out as a true champion of collaboration within Circuit 12’s child welfare system. Her role extends far beyond the bench, encompassing a deep commitment to the welfare of children and families, particularly through fostering collaboration and innovative approaches within the complex juvenile justice system. Thank you for your continued excellence and for going above and beyond to support the children and families we all serve!”

Circuit Judge Gilbert A. Smith, Jr. was recognized with the Lifetime Achievement Award. “On behalf of a grateful community, we thank you for your tireless dedication, your invaluable contributions, and the indelible mark you have left on us all. It is with our deepest respect and appreciation that we present you with this Lifetime Achievement Award.”

In addition to the certificate, Judge Smith was also presented with a unique, handcrafted plaque by local artisan, Siva Beharry, Luthier.

Beharry, who inherited his late-father’s guitar shop – Beharry Guitars – documented his build so we could see the process. Beharry said the wood for the plaque and gavel is from Craftsman Supply in Tampa, Florida, and the engraved plate is from The Trophy Case in Bradenton, Florida.

The engraved plate on Judge Smith’s plaque reads: “When you can plant a seed and be content with never seeing it bloom in your lifetime, you’ll know you’ve made the world a better place. Thank you, Judge Smith, for planting hope in this world.”
