Details

A few of your daily responsibilities:

  • Assist in the creation and implementation of community based alternative sanctions for juvenile offenders;
  •  Locates and collaborates with local and statewide personnel and organizations regarding available juvenile service programs;
  • Attends court as needed and identifies high risk and problem cases;
  • Follows up at arraignment and reports to court child’s compliance and treatment and other conditions for release imposed at detention hearing, makes appropriate recommendations;
  • Identifies youth, through detentions and/or other delinquency division hearings, which are involved in the delinquency system and ensures coordinated case management;
  • Develops and maintains working relationships with internal staff, state and county officials, attorneys, local organizations, and social service agencies, among others involved with the juvenile justice system to develop inter-agency projects and agreements;
  • Participates in the planning and committee level(s) in local juvenile justice advocacy meetings.

Job

Pursuant to Florida Statutes § 984.09 and § 985.037, the essential function of the Alternative Sanctions Coordinator is to organize, develop and implement juvenile justice alternative sanctions. The coordinator will act as the liaison between the judiciary, local Department of Juvenile Justice officials, Manatee County School Board employees, the State Attorney’s Office, and local law enforcement agencies. This position shall coordinate community based alternative sanctions, including non-secure detention programs, community service projects and other juvenile sanctions. The Juvenile Alternative Sanctions Coordinator works under the supervision of the Trial Court Administrator or designee and takes direction from the presiding Manatee County Juvenile Delinquency Court judge.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

Some of the skills, knowledge and abilities needed:

  • Knowledge in diversion services for juvenile offenders or juvenile law enforcement, court and case management procedures and terminology;
  • Knowledge of available community resources and social service resources;
  • Ability to prioritize work, organize and make sound judgments in offender supervision both in the office and in court;
  • Skill in program planning and management;
  • Skill in communicating effectively both orally and in writing, as well as in presentations;
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships and communications with juveniles, social service agencies, co-workers, department management, members of the judiciary, and the general public; and
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft and database applications including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneDrive.

Education

A bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, sociology, psychology, or a related field, supplemented by two (2) years of experience in program administration, program evaluation, or in state or local programs for children and youth, diversion services for juvenile offenders, or juvenile law enforcement; or an equivalent combination of education, certification, training and/or experience.
